An Original Xbox game ROM or XISO will not boot in Xemu by itself. Before the green startup animation appears, the emulator has to find the console’s BIOS, MCPX Boot ROM, and virtual hard disk. The Xbox BIOS download is packed into a single ZIP containing nine Flash ROM images: two modified Complex builds for emulation and seven Microsoft retail kernels from different periods of the console’s hardware.

Open the archive, and you will find two folders named xemu and retail. The first holds the Complex files used for emulation, while the second contains the numbered Microsoft firmware images. Every BIOS in the pack belongs to the first-generation Xbox, also known as the Original Xbox or Xbox Classic. None of them is Xbox 360 firmware.

One BIOS Pack, Different Emulator Rules

For an xemu setup, go straight to the xemu folder and choose Complex_4627v1.03.bin for the Flash ROM slot. This is a modified retail build, so unsigned software can get past checks that remain active in Microsoft’s original firmware. Cycling through 3944, 4034, or the later retail kernels will not get around those checks.

The MD5 for Complex_4627v1.03.bin is 21445c6f28fca7285b0f167ea770d1e5. Keep its filename unchanged after extraction, since some emulator frontends search for it directly.

Complex_4627.bin is included as an older alternative with the MD5 ec00e31e746de2473acfe7903c5a4cb7. It may suit a configuration already prepared around that release, but it does not need to be loaded alongside v1.03.

Both Complex images are 1 MB. Their size comes from the same 256 KB BIOS bank appearing four times to match the flash layout. The repeated data is expected and does not mean several different BIOS versions were merged into one file.

These files may also be useful with some older XQEMU-based setups that work with Xbox Flash ROM images. They should not be described as universal BIOS files, however. Emulator design matters.

Cxbx-Reloaded takes a different approach and does not normally require this BIOS pack. The experimental DirectXbox core currently asks for mcpx_1.0.bin and cromwell_1024.bin instead; its Microsoft BIOS support is not ready for commercial games. Checking the emulator’s own file requirements is more reliable than placing every Xbox BIOS in a general system folder.

The Retail Folder Follows Xbox Hardware Changes

The seven files inside the retail folder show how Microsoft’s firmware changed alongside the Original Xbox motherboard. Their kernel numbers identify particular releases, not a ladder of performance upgrades.

Xbox BIOS 3944 and 4034 belong to early Xbox 1.0 systems. Both are supplied as 1 MB images containing a repeated 256 KB firmware bank. They preserve the startup code associated with launch-era hardware.

Kernel 4817 is connected with Xbox 1.1. By this revision, Microsoft had removed the small dedicated GPU fan found in the first console design. The 4817 image retains the same repeated 1 MB arrangement as 3944 and 4034.

BIOS 5101, 5530, and 5713 cover the Xbox 1.2–1.4 period. These files are 256 KB, matching the smaller TSOP layout used by those motherboard generations. Some old compatibility charts extend this range to Xbox 1.5, although a distinct 1.5 motherboard was never confirmed.

BIOS 5838 belongs to the final Xbox 1.6 and 1.6b systems. These consoles introduced the Xcalibur video encoder, while later 1.6b units moved from Samsung to Hynix RAM and required different memory timings.

The retail kernels are useful when a physical console or firmware project needs an exact match. Choosing 5838 simply because it carries the highest number can produce the wrong hardware combination. For xemu game loading, the modified Complex file remains the relevant choice.

Preparing the Three xemu System Files

xemu recreates the console from the beginning of its boot process. Before the green Xbox animation appears, it expects three separate images: an MCPX Boot ROM, a Flash ROM or BIOS, and an Xbox hard disk image.

The ZIP supplies the Flash ROM choices only. Extract it and select xemu/Complex_4627v1.03.bin in the Flash ROM field. The MCPX image and virtual hard disk must be assigned separately, and none of the retail kernels should be placed in those fields.

The expected MCPX 1.0 file can be identified with these values:

  • File: mcpx_1.0.bin
  • Size: 512 bytes
  • MD5: d49c52a4102f6df7bcf8d0617ac475ed

A black xemu window is usually a reason to inspect the system-file paths before changing display options. Make sure the Flash ROM path leads to the extracted Complex_4627v1.03.bin file rather than the ZIP archive. Check the MCPX selection next, then confirm that the hard disk image has its own valid path.

Once the green startup animation reaches the dashboard, the selected BIOS has completed its part. A game that stops after that stage needs its disc image checked instead, as xemu expects a compatible Original Xbox image such as a properly prepared XISO.
