Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus ROM makes captured soldiers, rather than a story campaign, the center of the PSP game. Infinity Mission sends a four-soldier team through a changing run of stages, and a guard near the goal can be more valuable than the exit itself. Taking him alive may improve the unit. It may also cost everything gathered so far.

Plus is a standalone expansion, so Portable Ops is not required. The San Hieronymo campaign and its cutscenes are absent. Anyone looking for Big Boss’s original mission needs Portable Ops; this release is built around repeat infiltrations and what the squad manages to bring home.

One Bad Room Can Undo the Run

Infinity Mission uses locations from Portable Ops without sending them in one fixed order. Many stages end when the team reaches an advanced point. Special stages interrupt that rhythm. A timer may start, the goal may have to be reached unseen, or the squad may need to stay alive during an alert.

Equipment has to be found during the run. A strong soldier may still enter a stage without the weapon or recovery item needed for a difficult fight. CQC can open a route without killing a possible recruit. Once the exit appears, staying longer becomes a choice rather than a requirement.

Nothing collected is secure until the sequence is cleared or the team leaves by Fulton. A wipeout removes the recruits, equipment, and experience earned during that attempt. One soldier with the right medical or technical skill may ultimately matter more than a rare weapon left behind.

Old Snake and Raiden Enter the Roster

The roster can hold up to 200 soldiers. Old Snake from Metal Gear Solid 4, Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2, and Roy Campbell appear among the playable characters. Plus also introduces new careers, while soldiers can improve after being sent on repeated deployments.

Portable Ops save data can carry an existing squad into Plus. Without an earlier save, Infinity Mission fills the empty roster one capture at a time. A soldier who looks average at first may become useful after several missions, so the same familiar characters do not have to handle every run.

The larger roster was also made for versus play. PSP matches support up to six players and use 15 maps, including REX Hangar from the first Metal Gear Solid. Infinity Mission works in PPSSPP without a network connection. Multiplayer is separate: each participant must configure ad hoc play and use compatible connection settings before joining a room.

Good runs do not end with a cinematic. The new name in the roster is the reward.
