Story, setting and characters
The game came out on PlayStation 2 in 2004 and was developed by Traveller’s Tales Oxford Studio. The plot starts when a pair of mysterious “Evil Twins” show up and decide to destroy Crash’s home world. Crash thinks he is facing another typical fight with Dr. Neo Cortex, but things quickly twist into a forced partnership. For most of the story these two rivals are stuck together, arguing, tripping over each other and somehow saving the world at the same time. The humor is constant, with slapstick gags, silly dialogue and a tone that feels close to a cartoon.
Stages are built as long paths through open areas rather than narrow tunnels. One moment you are running along a cliff with the camera behind Crash, the next you are working through a section that feels closer to a side-scrolling platform game. Snowy mountains, jungles, laboratories and other odd locations appear one after another, and each region hides crates, collectibles and secret routes for players who like to search every corner instead of rushing to the exit.
Cortex is not just a talking companion. Crash can grab him, throw him across gaps, swing him into enemies or carry him to places only the doctor can reach. From time to time the game hands control over to Cortex or another character for a short stretch, changing the rhythm and giving you different moves to play with. Enemies, environmental traps and chase sequences help keep the adventure busy without losing the light mood.
