Pong ROM and the Start of an Era
In 1972, Atari put out Pong, a game that looked almost too simple to matter. A black screen, two white paddles, and a square dot bouncing back and forth. That was it. Still, people lined up around arcade machines to play. The back-and-forth was addictive, and soon Pong was showing up everywhere.
The game worked in the simplest way. One player on each side, moving a paddle up and down, trying to stop the ball from sliding past. Miss it, and the other side scored. Easy to learn, but once the ball picked up speed, it got tense. Crowds would gather, leaning in to see who could hold out longer. You’d hear cheers, groans, and a lot of laughter. Pong wasn’t just a screen with lines and a dot—it was a reason for people to come together.
Now, more than fifty years later, the Pong ROM makes it possible to step back into that moment. Running the ROM on a computer or a phone keeps the game exactly as it was: the sharp contrast of black and white, the steady rhythm of the ball, the pace of each volley. There are no extras, no modern updates, nothing polished. It feels like a digital time capsule, holding on to the quirks that made Pong stand out in the first place.
